Kate Hudson's relationship with her estranged dad may be evolving.
The "Almost Famous" star, 45, told "CBS Sunday Morning" that she doesn't "really have" a relationship with her father, musician Bill Hudson, who was married to her mom Goldie Hawn from 1976 to 1982. The couple separated when Kate Hudson and her brother, Oliver Hudson, were young children, and they were raised by Hawn and the actress' partner of more than 40 years, Kurt Russell.
But in the conversation with CBS that aired on Sunday, Hudson went on to reveal that things are "warming up" between her and her biological dad.
"There's warming ups of this all happening," she said. "But it will be whatever it will be."
Hudson added that she has "no expectation" of what will happen between her and her father. "I just want him to be happy," she shared.
'It's a 41-year-old issue':Kate Hudson opens up about estrangement from her father:
In a 2015 interview with The Daily Mail, Bill Hudson said that "I no longer recognize Oliver and Kate as my own," which came after Oliver Hudson called him out in a Father's Day Instagram post captioned "Happy abandonment day." At the time, Bill Hudson said that Kate and Oliver are both "dead to me" and should "stop using the Hudson name."
Kate Hudson told the "Today" show in 2021 that she and her brother "didn't know our dad" growing up, but she praised Russell for playing a "huge, huge part in sharing what it is to have a dependable father figure in our life."
But the "Glass Onion" star previously said on "The Howard Stern Show" in 2016 that Hawn "never spoke poorly" of her biological father, adding that even as a little girl, she understood that her dad leaving "didn't have to do with me and Oliver." She also said that she forgives her father. "Whatever those issues are, are just something that he has to live with, and that must be painful for him," Hudson said.

In the CBS interview, Hudson also choked up while discussing saying "goodbye" to her son, Ryder, when he left for college two years ago. "It's the strongest love I ever had," she said, calling Ryder an "incredible partner."
Hudson's CBS appearance comes after her brother, Oliver Hudson, opened up about his childhood "trauma" on the "Sibling Revelry" podcast, saying that he felt "unprotected at times" growing up with Hawn. In a TikTok video in April, Kate Hudson defended her brother against criticism he received for these remarks.
"I was like, 'Who cares?' And then I really started thinking about it and I'm like, 'Well, people do care, actually,' " Hudson said. "It's not nice when people take something out of context or they look at something you're doing and they get all negative about it, and they poke at it, and they scrutinize it and they criticize it."
In the March podcast episode, Oliver Hudson also expressed empathy for his father. "His dad left him when he was 5 years old in the middle of the night," he said. "My dad didn't do exactly that, but essentially he bailed."
